Family Owned and Operated Since 1960

The Schmechtig family has been in the landscaping business for nearly 50 years. Klaus Schmechtig came to the United States from Germany in the 1950s to learn the business from his uncle. In 1960 Klaus and his wife Gabriele, started their own business, single handedly servicing clients from Lake Forest to Evanston.

As word of mouth spread and his clientele grew, Klaus began to grow his company adding employees and services. As a teen, his son Mike worked for the company, and then after college and a brief career outside the industry, returned as a registered landscape architect. As Mike became more involved in day-to-day operations he further expanded the company to include design, construction and maintenance divisions along with administrative and operations support staff.

Today, under the leadership of Mike Schmechtig, the company has grown to include lighting and irrigation services and three nurseries. Despite the growth and changes, however, Schmechtig Landscapes has clung to Klaus’ original philosophy of good, honest service, top-notch landscape services and care for the environment, making it one of the most respected landscape companies in Chicago.
