How to Hire a Landscaping Contractor
Finding a landscaping contractor is not a difficult task, but assessing the qualifications
and business practices of an individual or a company can require substantial effort
on the part of the consumer on how to landscape. The State of Illinois and most of its municipalities do not define nor regulate the work of landscape contractors, which puts the burden of responsibility and risk on the consumer. Consumers in Illinois can look to the Illinois Landscape Contractors Association (ILCA) to find qualified, reputable and insured professionals providing all manner of landscape services. Through the ILCA, members obtain training and continuing education in both technical and business skills to enhance their business practices and the professionalism of their employees. The more than 800-member firms across the state have unparalleled access to research, publications and product information, as well as an open-line of communication to product manufacturers, educators and researchers.  Schmechtig Landscapes has been a member of the ILCA for over 25 years.  Following you will learn how we stand apart and what we can do for you.

Schmechtig Landscapes was thrilled to be a part of last week’s Antiques and Garden Fair at The Chicago Botanic Garden.  Our design titled Serenity Corners, provided an inviting and aesthetically-pleasing gateway into the Rose Garden tent.  Royal Building Products partnered with Schmechtig for this project introducing and launching a new product to the Midwest and Chicago area - Zuri Premium Decking.  The two beautiful wood-looking decks with a central knot inlay provided a unique accent detail to set the tone of “Serenity Corners”, our mirror image garden.

We incorporated a four corner raised garden to surround the decks. The retaining walls, accent benches, trellises and container pots enhanced and framed the space. The planting scheme utilized: a back drop of upright evergreens (Smaragd Arborvitaes) against the tent; a foreground of broadleaf evergreen hedges (Boxwoods);  Royal Magnolia’s providing a central sculptural element to accentuate and draw attention to its form, detail and natural beauty; an understory of flowering perennials layering down to spring bulbs and blooming groundcover; decorative containers  filled with a rich composition of spring color and texture to further enrich and frame this peaceful mirror image garden space.

Schmechtig thanks the Chicago Botanic Garden for asking us to create a garden for this year’s Antiques and Garden Fair event.  We are very grateful to the generous support of the following companies who helped in the creation and/or supply of materials for this garden space: ZURI Premium Decking By Royal Building Products (Decks), Lumberman’s Wholesale Inc. (Wholesale Distributor of Building Products), Kimball & Bean Garden Antiques (Hand Crafted Planters), Unilock (Rivercrest Walls), Wilson Nurseries & Landscape Supply (Rivercrest Walls), Woodway (Catalina Cedar Trellis Panels), Arboria (Serenity Benches) and Home Decorators (Accent Pillows and Mirrors).
